Ward 1 is just one of the 30 Wards which make up New Haven. Each Ward has its own Alder, which together comprise the Board of Alders.

Your Alder acts as your representative in city government - they are there to listen to your thoughts, complaints, and suggestions. Alders can propose legislation and also vote on legislation which has already been proposed.

New Haven government functions as a relationship between the Mayor and the Board of Alders, who jointly make decisions. These decisions include approving budget proposals, passing laws, confirming appointments for city positions, and approving road work (like bike lanes).
