Hi, I’m Rhea,
Vending at the New Haven Night Market
I was born and raised in New Haven and grew up in Wooster Square. I am happy to have been a part of important community gathering spaces around the city throughout my life. Since I was 9 years old, I’ve been a member of the choir at Trinity Church on the Green, which is located in Ward 1, welcomes all members of the community, and provides important social services – and have been known to spend my Saturdays at the farmers market, both as a market patron and a farm stand worker. For the past several years, I have also vended in artist markets across the city.
In college, I have been involved with Ward 1 since my first year, and have worked closely with downtown small businesses to help them thrive. These experiences have shaped me into someone who values community and the ties we all have to one another.
I’m currently a rising junior at Yale, and I’m grateful to still get to call New Haven home. To me, there is nothing as important as the ties we foster with one another. This is where true power lies: in community movements and collective action. From its artist collectives and library branches to its neighborhood parks and residents, New Haven is filled with such richness and beauty.
This community has made me who I am, and I want to help it thrive. Especially in times of intense political upheaval – like we are experiencing now – community building is critical. As one example, due to unprecedented and uncertain shifts in federal policies towards educational funding and immigration, both New Haven and Yale are navigating similar issues. Honoring the value of education and the contributions of immigrants are crucial to the commitments of the city and Yale. I believe that strengthening the ties between them at a moment like this can only make them both stronger and more resilient.
Ward 1’s greatest asset is its residents - together, we can create a thriving New Haven.
